Community Description

Higienópolis is an upscale neighborhood located in the central region of the Brazilian city of São Paulo. It is located in one of the highest regions of the city, called Espigão da Paulista. It has a residential profile, characterized by a population with medium-high and high incomes, and is also known for the presence of relevant cultural institutions.

The region in which it is located has been occupied since the 16th century, and its development took place parallel to that of the city itself. The neighborhood stands out for the presence of a large number of examples of architecture of different trends. It has always been the address of significant traditional families of the São Paulo aristocracy, mostly of Portuguese origin at the beginning and later of North Americans and other nationalities, now housing inhabitants of different origins, migrants and immigrants, including Jews of different nationalities. mostly coming from Central Europe. It has also become one of the favorite neighborhoods for artists in general, being the stage for great activities during modern art week.

It is limited to the neighborhoods of: Cerqueira César, Pacaembu, Santa Cecília and Vila Buarque.
History
The region where the current neighborhoods of Higienópolis, Pacaembu and Perdizes are located comprised "Sesmaria do Pacaembu", which was divided into Pacaembu de Cima, do Meio and Baixo.[1] The Higienóplis neighborhood is located in part of what was known as "de Cima". The extensive rural property belonged to the Society of Jesus. Its members, the Jesuits, received it in the 16th century as a result of a donation made by grantee Martim Afonso de Sousa. These religious people were violently expelled from the Kingdom of Portugal and its colonies in 1760, by order of Marquês de Pombal and their assets were confiscated and sold, including the sesmaria.[2] And there, over the years, members of the São Paulo aristocracy built their farms, urban-rural properties and were self-sufficient in water and subsistence.[2] The Irmandade da Santa Casa de Misericórdia de São Paulo already existed in the Vila Buarque neighborhood region, inaugurated in 1884, as well as the Chá viaduct inaugurated in 1892, which brought to the place, development and flow respectively to that place that was considered inhospitable.

Due to the growth of the city, caused by the rural exodus and the Coffee Cycle, these lands were subdivided.[2] The former lands of Baron de Ramalho and the legacy of the estate of the Pernambuco priest Wanderley, which together covered 847,473 m², were purchased in 1893 by Martinho Buchard and Victor Nothmann, German capitalists.[1] The two entrepreneurs brought from France the project and materials for the construction of the city's second planned, high-standard subdivision, specifically intended for São Paulo's elite. First called "Boulevard Bouchard", the subdivision was launched in 1895. With the subsequent additions of the already existing sites of Dona Veridiana, who ordered the construction in 1884 of a "villa" called Maria that flanked today's Avenida Higienóplis until what is today Avenida Angélica and Dona Angélica who also owned a farm; that all these lands came together to form what is today the neighborhood of Higienópolis (city or place of hygiene), named after a hotel indicated for its cleanliness and climatic conditions that was managed by Cia Higienópolis, add to this which were highlighted by the altitude of the neighborhood, which prevented the accumulation of large floods, which could result in areas of easy contamination by Malaria, Yellow Fever and Typhus and by the publicity of the project, such as the supply of water and sewage that came soon after, which At the time, they were available in a few places in the city.[3] In addition, it would also have gas lighting, afforestation and would be served by tram lines,[2] being considered the largest subdivision in territorial extension and social and economic importance.[4]
